Smile, Flower! The Art of Takashi Murakami

Jaf Yusuf

Japanese artist Takashi Murakami’s artwork references both Japanese popular culture and Japanese traditional art. He also works in fashion design and with art fairs and is a keen supporter of young emerging artists. A true all-rounder!

Murakami’s smiling flower face motif will be our focus today! We are going to be tracing as a nod to the replication and reproduction that characterises contemporary popular culture. Think about how your petals could form a pattern of colours. Once you’ve done, perhaps make flower with different expressions!

You will need:

  • A pencil
  • Two pieces of paper
  • A black pen
  • Watercolour paints, water pot and paintbrush (but you can use anything to add colour)
